Pierre Alexandre Meur, 21

Singapore, Singapore

Pierre Alexandre Meur (b. 2005) is a Singaporean composer and flautist whose musical work bridges classical tradition with contemporary exploration. He is most active in the band scene as a flautist and composer, receiving multiple premieres by Singapore Wind Symphony Youth, of which he is a member. He is also a student of Dr. Robert Casteels undertaking composition, conducting and analysis. As a flautist, Alex’s playing has strongly influenced his compositional voice. His works often demonstrate an intimate awareness of instrumental technique, phrasing, and timbral nuance, particularly within the wind and chamber repertoire. This performer’s perspective informs his writing, allowing him to craft music that is both idiomatic and expressive while remaining technically engaging for performers. As a composer, Alex is interested in the dialogue between historical musical language and modern compositional thought. His style draws inspiration from the structural clarity and craft of earlier classical traditions while embracing more adventurous harmonic and textural ideas. He frequently explores complex harmonic colours, evolving motivic development, and detailed orchestration, creating works that balance intellectual structure with expressive intensity. Alex’s artistic ambitions extend beyond composition alone. He aims to contribute actively to the international classical music landscape through composition, conducting, and collaboration with ensembles. Recently, he has also started a multi-stylistic group with friends aiming to raise awareness of contemporary classical music as well as free improvisation, working hand in hand with several local composers and other members of the fine arts community to merge both auditory, visual and verbal art forms. He will be pursuing formal studies in composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland as of 2026, seeking to further refine his musical language while developing a broader artistic voice that connects performers, audiences, and contemporary musical ideas. Through his work as both performer and composer, Alex continues to explore the boundaries of both orchestral and wind band music, striving to create works that are both rooted in tradition and forward-looking in their artistic vision.
